Wilton-native Donegan takes aim at fast times for today’s Firecracker4 road race

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Several adjectives might be used to describe local runner Shaun Donegan. Active. Spontaneous. Involved. Hard-working.

And, oh yeah — fast.

Donegan has consistently put his name at the top of local race results. He hopes to continue that trend in this morning’s Firecracker4.

Firecracker4: Four-mile race in Saratoga Springs on the Fourth of July

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It’s not your usual running race.

At four miles and with several challenging hills, this morning’s Firecracker4 will pit some of the areas top runners against each other and the terrain, as hundreds of runners more accustomed to running 5K races strain over an extra 0.9 miles.

The Firecracker4 bolts off the line on Broadway near the City Center at 8 a.m. Organizers are expecting about 1,500 runners to take the start.

Volleyball league serves up fun at Almost Saratoga pub on Route 9

BALLSTON SPA — Anyone who drives down Route 9 to or from Saratoga on a Wednesday evening has probably seen some of the volleyball action at Almost Saratoga, a local pub just south of Exit 13.

Players are used to repeated horn beeps and the occasional screams from a passing car window during the three-hour co-ed weekly games.

Veitch on racing: Today’s Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Race Track an event fit for royalty

Neil Campbell said it best in his introduction to “The Plate,” a marvelous work of history by Louis Cauz and Beverly Smith celebrating last year’s 150th anniversary of the Queen’s Plate.

Campbell noted that waves of social, political and technological change come and go, but the great race remains in place each summer for Canadians to enjoy.

Today is the 151st edition of the Canadian classic, worth $1 million at 1¼ miles at Woodbine Race Track in Toronto.

Veitch: Keep your eyes on Friend or Foe at Saratoga Race Course

Keep an eye on this exciting New York-bred when the Saratoga meeting gets underway.

Friend or Foe, who remained unbeaten in three starts by capturing the Mike Lee Stakes on Sunday at Belmont, is headed for the $500,000 Jim Dandy at the Spa on July 31.

He won the seven-furlong Mike Lee in a blistering 1:21 3/5, lumbering along behind the pace and then drawing off in the stretch.

Friend or Foe galloped out strongly another three furlongs past the wire.

The Jim Dandy, the major local prep for the Travers Stakes, is at 1-1/8 miles.

I checked in with trainer John Kimmel on Monday morning.

“I think he’s ready for the two turns,” he said. “He’s got the foundation and he’s a brilliant mover; a very manageable horse with tactical speed.” (more…)

Scott on racing: Late bloomers like Zenyatta, Bernardini and Summer Bird make their mark

Jockey Mike Smith and Zenyatta are led to the track to compete in the Vanity Handicap horse race at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif. on June 13. Zenyatta won her 17th consecutive race that day, giving her the longest winning streak by a modern day thoroughbred in unrestricted races.

Question: What do Curlin, Tiznow, Azeri, Mineshaft and Saint Liam have in common — besides being named Horse of the Year this past decade?

Answer: None of them raced as a 2-year-old.

Neither did Zenyatta, Pleasantly Perfect, Bernardini, Rock Hard Ten, Roses in May, Albert the Great, Kona Gold, The Tin Man and Sightseek, to name other standout late-developers of recent years. (more…)
