Lengthy naturalization process a small price to pay for some Saratoga County residents

SARATOGA SPRINGS — People rock to the Bruce Springsteen song, “Born in the USA,” while taking the privilege of citizenship for granted.

Not David Hernandez, the head chef at Circus Café on Broadway.

Hernandez is a Mexico City native and one of the millions who have gone through the lengthy and somewhat challenging naturalization process to become a U.S. citizen.

He did it not just for his own benefit, but so that his three children could have a better life, too.

Lake George Opera takes on ‘Carmen’

The opening of the Lake George Opera at Saratoga’s 49th summer season is only days away, and one of the two operas on the roster is Bizet’s “Carmen.” This summer will be the sixth time that LGO performs “Carmen.”

Why have they chosen to do “Carmen” so many times? According to artistic director/conductor Curtis Tucker, “Carmen is one of the most popular operas because its combination of music and drama is among the best ever written. The music is very well-known; in fact, it is so recognizable that even people who have never seen the opera, or any opera for that matter, will recognize most of the music.”

Saratoga Springs history: The penny arcades

It was the summer of 1947. World War II had ended and a wave of prosperity was sweeping the country. I was 11 years old a my cousin, Pat Ginocchi, was 12 and we loved spending the day at the Kaydeross Amusement Park on Saratoga Lake. One of the big features of the park was the penny arcade. There was nothing like it anywhere. Even Coney Island had nothing quite like it. This arcade had things that I never saw anywhere else, probably because most of the items in it had been there since the 1920s when it opened. The best part was that in this B.C. era (before chips) everything really was a penny.

Flemings celebrate first anniversary

Andrew and Livia Fleming are celebrating their first wedding anniversary today, July 4, at the Roosevelt Inn and Suites in Saratoga Springs.

The couple, who recently moved from Europe to New York City, were married July 4, 2009,  at Chateau Bela in Slovakia.
